Summary
Not long after landing in Amsterdam for the Hadoop Summit 2014, it became clear that Hadoop and the big data industry as a whole have taken an evolutionary leap in the past year.
There are many people/organisations who deserve a mention for the part they’ve played in the past 12 month; one of them being Hortonworks. They have done an incredible job in delivering on their promise to drive forward the open-source technology stack, announcing the release of key improvements around Hive, Tez, Falcon, and HDFS.
Pick of the talks
A really inspiring talk was also given by HSBC’s Alasdair Anderson, on how Hadoop is not just another cool technology, but is truly transformational to businesses through fundamentally altering the cost and risk profile of building data platforms at scale. It was promising which agrees firmly with BDP’s view and messaging to clients to date.
The Hive+Tez committer talk was particularly interesting with a demonstration of a 100x speed improvement over Hive 0.10 as well as an always-on, interactive query service which places open-source Hive+Tez as a firm contender against Cloudera’s Impala project.
Final Word
Overall, it was a really successful conference, bringing together big data companies and users from all over the world to share ideas and inspire each other to build bigger and better data analytics. Countdown to the European Hadoop Summit 2015 begins!
